This is the place to visit to learn about Roman and British history. This is worth the time, at least a full hour.
You'll see excavated ruins, current dog's, beautiful setting & really outstanding museum.
It's worth the money to spend a couple hours there ..
But the ticket for the Roman museum and Vindolanda, they are worth 4 hours together and THEN go do a two mile walk asking Hadrian's wall.

This place is absolutely amazing!! The ruins are amazing, to walk in the footsteps that are OVER a 1000 years old. It's so big, it's incredible! The archeological finds in the museum are absolutely amazing, impressive finds! We would 1000% recommend visiting here, especially if you are into history and archeological places, a hidden gem that needs to be known more about!

I found this to be an amazing experience. Wandering through the remains of this historic site. Getting a feeling for how the people lived. And the many many layers of buried history. The site is still actively being worked on by archaeologists and I look forward to more incredible discoveries.
The unearthed buildings of the fort and village were a good morning of exploration. And the museum contains many of their discovies on display. Thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend for any with any interest in roman history, and history of England, Scotland and all of Britainia.
The charming outside of the museum with the river and sculptures is also a lovely interlude before visiting the museum itself and seeing all the amazingly well preserved remains of leather and wood that the muds held across time.
I recommend buying the savers ticket online and visiting the nearby Roman Army Museum for the full experience. (there is a cafe attached to the vindolanda museum here for a break between the two)

This place is incredible with a fantastic museum.
Would recommend timing your visit for one of the guided tours.
We had a lovely volunteer guide called Paul who you can tell has a real passion for what he does.
Staff were all lovely and the site cafe was good value - unusual for these type of places.
Just be aware parking is up a steep hill !
Only 2 disabled parking spaces at the bottom which were already taken so did cause us problems.

Absolutely amazing museum and ruins. I've been to many UNESCO sites inc. Pompeii and this, although much much smaller, is just as good and on your doorstep! Incredible collection of items and original 2000 year old letters from Romans to each other. Absolutely recommended!

We visited Vindolanda on New Year’s Eve in the midst of heavy rain, but it didn’t dampen our spirits one bit—what an incredible experience! Our guide was outstanding, sharing fascinating insights into the history of the forts and the lives of their inhabitants over time. Their knowledge and passion really brought the site to life for us.
The museum is truly a treasure trove, with beautifully preserved artefacts that offer a moving glimpse into Roman life. From personal items to larger finds, every display is curated with care and attention. It’s one of the most engaging museums we’ve visited.
The café was a welcome stop after exploring, with delicious food that warmed us up perfectly. Vindolanda is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it. Rain or shine, this place is absolutely worth your time!

An amazing exhibition. As a history enthusiast I found the site tried to explain the area as best it could. The artefacts are amazing. Be warned, for the amateur it’s quite hard to know what you’re looking at despite the information boards, I think a bit of research beforehand will make your visit so much more productive and enjoyable.

Exceptional visit, you can take an outdoors walk through the remains of 400 years of Roman settlement in Britain, along Roman roads & visit the Museum of extensive archaeological finds. A really good insight into life in a Roman hill fort. Good cafe too. NOTE we visited in the winter & it was very quiet, we were told it's very busy in the summer. The site is on a hillside, it's a steep slope to the museum. Approach roads are quite narrow lanes.
